Six of the most inspirational Black Muslim women in the world

After the death of George Floyd, it has once again highlighted the many issues people in this world face based on the colour of their skin. One of the loveliest things about the Muslim community is the sheer diversity within it. Despite this, we also know of the racism that exists within the Muslim community. We don’t want to be part of the problem but part of the solution. So we’ve put together a list of awesome black inspirational Muslim women who deserve all the hype!

“All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black, nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action”

The last sermon of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

Ibtihaj Muhammad

This medal winning Olympian represented the US in the 2016 Olympics, competing in fencing. She is hands down, one of the most well known hijabis in sport! What you may not know is she also has her own modest clothing line called Louella. Talk about an achiever!

Hani Sidow

A published author and influencer. Hani is a trailblazer in the beauty and modest fashion niche. She realised there was a lack of fashion advice for women like herself and wanted to fill that gap. So of course we couldn’t miss her out of our black inspirational Muslim women list. Her book “Insta-glam” is a guide to popular makeup looks on Instagram and how to achieve them.

Hodan Yusuf

Business owner, writer and public speaker. Hodan is just an all round awesome woman and inspiration. Her business is selling the stunning head wraps that form part of her iconic look. She’s also a Mum of four. How does she do it all? We have no idea!

Halima Aden

Of course this list wouldn’t be complete without Halima, who is the first hijabi woman to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated in a birkini! We’re so proud of her for standing by her Muslim values despite the difficulties she’s faced in the fashion industry. She’s helped bring modest fashion into the mainstream industry and made it more acceptable for women around the world to wear hijab. She was also the first hijabi to win Miss Minnesota.

Ilhan Omar

She is a proud hijabi and the first black woman to hold an elective office in Minnesota. She’s also the first Somali-American serving as a US representative. Politics plays a huge role in our daily lives yet we often see a lack of diversity in those representing us. It hasn’t been an easy journey for Ilhan but we’re glad her voice is there to be heard in the political landscape. So of course she’s in the list of most inspirational Muslim women.

Hodhen Liaden

She’s a beauty and fashion influencer who founded @thedarkskinsisters, a culture blog dedicated to raising the voices and empowering fellow dark skinned sisters. What’s more inspiring than a fellow Muslim sister who lifts up other inspiring Muslim sisters.

We hope you enjoyed this list of black inspirational Muslim women, let us know if you think we’ve missed anyone of who should be part of this list! There are so many women out there, representing how strong and beautiful our community is. We also wanted to make sure we played our part in lifting them up and giving them the credit they deserve. If you liked this article and would love to give some more credit to these ladies, don’t forget to share!
